Keep in mind

---Dress and groom for a promotion.
---Stay late to meet an important deadline.
---Find ways to enjoy your job. Share your enthusiasm with your colleagues.
---Be willing to take on more responsibility.
---Help out in ways you feel will make you more valuable to the organization.
---Take any training that is available from your employer. Even if it is not in your practice area, it may help you gain new skills.
---You won't get much positive attention unless you do more than is expected of you.
---If no one expects too much, it is easier to be seen as successful.
---Look for some way to measure the results of your work.

Working for a prestigious law firm or a major corporation means being exposed to high-profile cases and deals. It will give you instant credibility in the job market throughout your career. However, prestige is not everything.

Sometimes, a job just doesn't work out. Ask for a reassignment within the organization before you give up. If you do decide to leave, begin looking for a job, quietly. Remember that your next employer will want to contact your previous ones.

Resume/Curriculum Vitae tips

Candidates for jobs with U.S. companies are well advised not to include a photo of themselves with their resume, as is common practice in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

U.S. employers do not want their hiring decisions influenced by a person’s appearance, as doing so could violate the country’s anti-discrimination laws, which prohibit bias based on age, race, and other factors.

SCREENING

Even if you have superb qualifications, we are duty-bound to pursue any number of impressive individuals discovered during the search and to present to our clients a "final slate of candidates," all of whom are comparably qualified.

Our screening involves an application, reference checking, degree verification and interview, when necessary. We encourage candidates to maintain a valid personal email address at all times. Our clients decide whom to interview based upon their reaction to your resume and background. However, we ensure that resumes are seen and read. If appropriate, we will refine them in order to emphasize the substantive skills most desired by each client.

Be prepared to provide the following upon request:

* Hard copies of an updated resume
* Law school transcripts
* Reference letters
* Language certificates, if applicable
* Legal writing samples
* Copy of licenses

Once received, your resume is promptly entered into our database and made available to our legal search consultants who specialize in the areas matching your skills.

Your background is reviewed to determine your chances of being offered an interview, based on the client's specific requirements. We then contact you to discuss the career opportunity. Your resume is sent to the client only if you show an interest in the position.

Attorneys are expected to have one telephone followed by two face interviews. The search process usually takes several months. If you do not hear from us, your resume will remain active indefinitely and you will be considered for all future positions for which you are well suited.

A recent market research shows that employers make a decision on a resume in 20 seconds or less. And only one interview is usually granted for every 200 resumes reviewed.

Are you confident that your resume will survive the cut?

Don't Let Spam Filters
Delete or Reject Your Resume

As we have tightened e-mail filters in recent months to keep out spam and a spate of damaging computer viruses, they also unintentionally have blocked all sorts of legitimate e-mail containing résumés among other files. Our filtering technology has more than 10,000 rules to keep out unwanted e-mail. Messages containing attached files sent from unknown addresses can be automatically deleted, for instance. We also can block vast numbers of suspected spam senders whose addresses are on "blacklists," or deflect all the mail from an Internet-service provider known to be used by spammers. In some cases, you may never receive a response from us if your own Internet-service provider blocks the messages from International Counsel Search.

Send your resume and cover letter from a "good" e-mail address. Messages from silly e-mail addresses may look like junk email and be deleted unread. While you can no longer assume that an e-mail you send will be received, you also can no longer assume that you will be notified that it wasn't received. Spam filters just delete suspected spam or divert it into folders that may never be checked or be automatically deleted after being in the folder for several days.

You also need to avoid the subjects used by computer viruses or junk e-mailers (like "Hi," "Important," "Information," etc.).
