FOREIGN ASSIGNMENT
In general, the best major markets for
relocation have been California, the East Coast (including
New York City, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Boston and Philadelphia)
followed by Chicago. Other cities offering steady growth, affordable housing,
and an outstanding environment for raising families without the high cost of
living, frenetic pace and congestion of larger metropolitan areas are Atlanta,
Austin, Miami.
Bilingual attorneys may consider Paris, London, Frankfurt,
Berlin, Rome, Geneva, Brussels, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Toronto,
Montreal, Mexico, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro.
As foreign legal markets began to open up, those who enjoy travel and
intellectual challenge may undertake voluntary rotation at an overseas office. Since most of the work
done in the foreign offices is transactional, corporate attorneys often get the
assignments, first. However, litigators can expect to work on international
arbitrations.
Other who are benefiting from the globalization of law firms are LLMs, who are
generally more experienced than their JD or LLB colleagues.
Firms and corporations are finding LLMs
increasingly attractive as prospective recruits.
In addition to the intellectual
and sometimes language challenges, there are numerous benefits lo living abroad.
Many firms provide substantial cost of living adjustment and relocation expenses
benefits. Associates at the London office of
Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP receive a $50,000
cost of living adjustment and an additional $4,000 relocation allowance.
Attorneys seeking an
overseas career opportunity have options beyond large New York firms with
extensive overseas networks. Prestigious London, Paris, Frankfurt, Montreal, and
Toronto firms have also been expanding into other continents. Language skills or
prior experience in the destination country is helpful but not required.

---Steptoe & Johnson LLP's Washington, DC, office allow

£80,000
($157,072) in London and pays all course fees and a
